Today's Press
There are many worldwide problems that deal with the Freedom of the Press. Some countries do not allow freedom of the press and punish people who put to use the press. They do that to protect their reputation and to stop information from leaking out to the public. Some countries, not just former Soviet Union countries, did not get freedom of press until the fall of the Berlin Wall. These countries include places in Africa.
In Russia, they have a communist government. The government holds all the power, and is very strict. Because of this, the freedom of expression in Russia is extremely limited, with lots of government pressure on the media. The government has been denying the access of information for the journalists. For the press that is released, it is edited and approved to confirm that the press is not biased or giving out any valuable information. The government is also not letting any tape and film recordings be released, and are influencing senior editors to change the media edited. The government is making false accusations against reporters. Overall, in Russia, their is too much censorship, therefore they do not have the freedom of press. This is the same problem in China. In the United Kingdom, they are questioning to what length should the press have freedom. Overall, other countries are having major problems with their press freedom.
Fortunately, the United States of America allows Freedom of the Press. Journalists are allowed to go around and gather information about the daily events. Publishers and writers are allowed to go out voicing their opinion to the media and outside world. Still, many outbreaks are happening with the media. The court rules that it is legal for media journalists to gather information about problems occurring, and sharing their opinion on it. The United State's information still leaks out to the public, because our federal government does not obtain the shield law, unlike 39 of the U.S. states. The shield law is a law that protects witnesses from sharing specific information, especially in court that protects media journalists from having to share private sources.
